It was a must-win game for the Lahore Lions and young Saad Nasim rose to the occasion to build a 75-run partnership with Mohammad Hafeez. The 24-year old batsman scored a vital 25-ball 31 to help steady the innings.
While expressing his happiness at the 55-run win which kept the Lahore Lions in the hunt, Saad, in this chat with clt20.com, was cognisant of the fact that there was still no clarity on which two teams would progress to the main draw of the tournament.
Speaking about the opportunity to play in the tournament, Saad, who had earlier scored a half-century against Northern Knights, also mentioned he hopes to catch the eyeballs by displaying skills on the international stage that the CLT20 affords to the players.
Excerpts from the interview:
What was the atmosphere in the dressing room like ahead of the game?
First of all I would like to thank God for helping us win with a good margin. The atmosphere in the dressing room was good and positive.
(Mohammad) Hafeez bhai, Umar (Akmal), Ahmed (Shehzad) had all emphasised that we should play with a positive mindset and play according to the merit of the ball. We’re all feeling good now, but a lot will depend of the result of the next game between Mumbai Indians and Northern Knights.
What was going on in your mind when you came in to bat at 52 for three?
At the time (Mohammad) Hafeez bhai was also at the wicket and he told me to play according to the merit of the ball. The idea was to take singles and extend the innings and lay a platform. We wanted to consolidate our position and then try and take on the bowling.
What would you say about your captain’s knock?
He played a brilliant knock. And at the same time he kept telling me what to do and talked me through the innings. The way he handled the situation and played was excellent. I have learnt a lot of things from him – like handling pressure, batting in different situations and many other such things.
Did you think you had enough runs of the board to defend?
Yes, given the pitch we played on, we had good runs. We had bowlers like Wahab (Riaz), Adnan Rasool, (Mohammad) Hafeez bhai himself and especialy (Aizaz) Cheema who bowled extremely well.
How did you prepare for this tournament?
I had a little knowledge of the pitch here as I had played a local tournament in Sirsa, Haryana in 2010. Besides that, the way we practiced here before the tournament for couple of days under the coach’s guidance helped.
What is your role in the batting line-up?
Basically, I am a middle-order batsman and bat at 5 or 6. I was told to play my normal game in difficult times and handle the situation accordingly.
What does it mean to play on a platform like CLT20?
It means a lot. Performing here can give me an opportunity to play for the national side. The whole world is watching which makes it a big thing.
